Harbor Academy Virtual Learning School - HAVLS

Purpose

The Trigg County Public Schools Harbor Academy and Virtual School (HAVLS) provides students in grades 6–12 with a flexible, student-centered educational option designed to meet diverse learning needs. The Academy supports motivated and independent learners through engaging, standards-aligned online courses that promote academic growth and postsecondary readiness.

Enrollment

Virtual learning placements are available to students in grades 6–12 who can demonstrate residency in Trigg County, as well as the motivation, independence, and organizational skills necessary for success in an online environment. Enrollment in the Trigg County Public Schools HAVLS is a selective process intended to ensure the virtual setting is the best fit for each student’s needs.

Interested students must complete the online application through the district website or submit a paper copy (See Appendix A) to the Trigg County Central Office. Applications are reviewed by a virtual learning committee, typically including the school principal, school counselor, director of pupil personnel, and lead teacher. Eligible students and parents/guardians will then be scheduled for an interview. Enrollment is limited, and the committee’s placement decision is final.

Successful virtual learners are self-motivated, able to work independently, meet deadlines, seek help when needed, and follow a consistent schedule. Families must provide reliable internet access, help students stay organized, monitor academic progress, communicate with teachers, and maintain a structured learning environment.

Students receiving special education services may participate after approval by the Admissions and Release Committee (ARC), which confirms that virtual learning is the least restrictive environment. Students requesting virtual placement for medical or mental health reasons may be asked to provide supporting documentation from a licensed provider.

Full-time students must take a minimum of six courses each semester.

Once accepted, students must continue meeting program expectations to remain enrolled.
